Spin Column Tubes for Purification and Isolation of Biomolecules

Spin column tubes are a specially developed system for the purification, isolation, and separation of biomolecules. The system is widely used in molecular biology for applications involving DNA, RNA, plasmids, viral DNA, and genomic DNA.

Spin columns are also commonly used for PCR purification and sample preparation for next-generation sequencing (NGS), where high-quality and precise handling of nucleic acids is essential.

Applications of Spin Column Tubes

In molecular biology, the isolation of plasmid DNA from microbial cells is a common procedure. It is used for applications such as:

  • DNA sequencing
  • cloning
  • gene therapy
  • other genetic analyses

After performing a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), it is often necessary to purify the PCR products from remaining reaction components such as nucleotides, primers, enzymes, and buffers. This process is commonly referred to as PCR purification.

With the AHN myTube® Spin Column System, PCR purification becomes faster and more efficient. The system provides a simple way to recover concentrated DNA from agarose gels.

DNA gel purification follows three simple steps:

Bind – Wash – Elute

This ensures efficient DNA recovery and provides a cost-effective solution for laboratories.

Spin column technology also simplifies and accelerates the extraction of genomic DNA, resulting in high-quality nucleic acids suitable for downstream applications such as sequencing and cloning.

Structure of the AHN myTube® Spin Column System

The AHN myTube® Spin Column System consists of:

  • a 0.8 ml round-bottom filter tube
  • a 1.5 ml or 2.0 ml collection tube

The system is designed to be compatible with most standard laboratory centrifuges.

Spin column tubes can be used at:

  • up to 25,000 × g in centrifuges with fixed-angle rotors
  • up to 30,000 × g in centrifuges with swing-out rotors

The system is engineered to withstand high mechanical stress and chemical exposure, making it suitable for demanding laboratory applications.

Materials and Quality

The filter tubes are manufactured from high-quality clear virgin polypropylene, which does not interfere with reaction components. The material provides:

  • high transparency for easy sample visualization
  • high filtration speed
  • optimal collection volume

Spin columns are equipped with high-quality filter membranes that meet the requirements of many common laboratory protocols.

Filter Membrane Options

The filter membranes are available in two material types.

Glass Fiber Filter (GF)
Glass fiber filters are recommended for:

  • DNA purification
  • RNA purification
  • pre-filtration of complex or particle-rich solutions
  • applications with high particle loads

Advantages:

  • fast flow rate
  • high filtration capacity

Polyethylene Filter (PE)
Polyethylene filters are mainly used for:

  • coarse particle filtration
  • pre-filtration before other filter types
  • support filters in combination with other membranes

Advantages:

  • hydrophobic material
  • excellent chemical resistance

Collection Tubes

The system includes a 2.0 ml collection tube with clear graduation marks, making it easier to read volumes and reducing the risk of handling errors.

Like the filter tubes, the myTube® collection tubes are manufactured from autoclavable virgin polypropylene and produced in AHN’s ISO 9001-certified manufacturing facilities.

Wide Range of Applications

The AHN myTube® Spin Column System can be used in many life science applications. The different filter membrane options make the system flexible and suitable for DNA and RNA purification, filtration, and laboratory sample preparation.
